Biochemistry Degree Program

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biochemistry
Degree Options:
  • Major (BS)

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics the prospects for employment of biochemists is projected to continually increase as the demand for individuals with a background in biomedical research grows.

Our biochemistry degree program provides students with a broad background in the chemical and molecular aspects of the life sciences. Biochemistry majors graduate ready for employment or graduate school at the interface of chemistry and biology, and medical, dental or pharmacy school.

The interdisciplinary nature of this degree can make our students more versatile when looking for a job, professional degrees, and graduate school options. A degree in Biochemistry is great foundation for students pursuing pre-med and pre-professional, especially pre-pharmacy, who may want a more in-depth chemistry background. With courses in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and statistics, students learn the key concepts preparing them for the MCAT.

Pre-Professional Health Programs

Students interested in pre-professional health programs often major in Biology, Biochemistry, or Chemistry, although pre-professional students can come from any major. ¹ú²ú̽»¨ offers pre-professional programs in the following professions:

  • Dentistry
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Optometry
  • Pharmacy
  • Physician Assistant
  • Physical Therapy
  • Veterinary Science

Students interested in pursuing careers in these programs work with members of ¹ú²ú̽»¨'s Health Professions Committee for individualized advising. ¹ú²ú̽»¨ and the University of Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio also have memorandums of understanding (MOU) as part of UIW's Health Professions Pathway.
